The American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson reveals: How long can you survive on every planet in the Solar System

photo: curiosity.com
Apart from Terra, things are not rosy on other planets regarding life, the longest being more than two minutes (with no spacesuit and if you hold your breath), and the shortest practically instant.

Mercury, which is always showing only one side of the Sun, offers the possibility of death (almost instant) or from excessively high temperatures or at a temperature excessively low.

Atmosphere of Venus is suitable, but for a furnace atmosphere composition that if we add 97% carbon dioxide and the remaining 3% of a number of toxic substances.

Mars because the rarified atmosphere, low temperature does not feel so strong, but the air, of course, is unbreathable. Tyson gives the chance of survival of less than 2 minutes. The rest of the planets give no chance of survival even for a second, pressures, temperatures and atmospheric composition being in no way suitable to sustain life.

Key Facts In This Video

1
On Mercury, the side that faces the sun is super hot, and the opposite side is extremely cold. (0:51)

2
The surface of Venus is 900 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than a pizza oven. (1:11)

3
Jupiter has no surface to land on—you would descend into its gaseous atmosphere until you were crushed by the pressure. (1:54)

On Earth is ok. In many places. Well, in some places, but the blame is not only the planet.

Mayan document known as Codex of Grolier was finally elucidated

Mayan document known as Code of Grolier received attention when it was exhibited in New York City`s Grolier Club in 1971.

Discovered in 1960 in vague circumstances, it was considered a copy from the outset. For decades, the ten pages of paintings and astronomical calendars dust was placed in a museum warehouse Mexican. But a study by researchers at Yale University, Brown and California has determined that it is a Mayan text written in the twelfth century and is the oldest document created in America.

In 1966, Collector Mexican Josué Saenz is presented by a group of men that he does not know a document which, as said by them, represent a code Mayan, claiming that they had discovered in a cave in foothills of the Sierra de Chiapas, along with other Mayan artifacts. At the time, experts have concluded that it is a fake.

Five years later, Saenz instructed him archaeologist Michael Coe document outlining the Grolier Club in New York, in an exhibition entitled "Ancient Mayan Calligraphy", which aroused the interest of researchers and archaeologists. Recently, he went back to the attention of scientists and archaeologist Coe and his colleague tried to prove the truth of its working two years to achieve this purpose, but were poised to its predecessor, the falsification, for they realized that using a particular blue pigment that was used in it requires a technique which was invented at the time.

According to Dr. Stephen Houston, of Brown University, many doubts about this document can be attributed to how it was obtained, explaining that an artifact with unclear provenance born such rumors.

It is this uncertain provenance has caused archaeologists to question originaliatetea this artifact. However, it is believed that it was moved from its original place and that they can get the notoriety it deserves, that of a work of art of the late Mayan civilization and the oldest book created in America.

How long do you need to get to the other side of the globe, if you build a tunnel through the center of the Earth

After removing the air and putting on special equipment, you could soar freefall through the tunnel.

To think as a child, you can dig a hole to get to the other side of the Earth is very funny and seems very simple. Simply jumping in the tunnel and you let gravity lead you to your destination. If reality would allow such a "journey", however, things would not be as simple as they seem at first glance.

Firstly because gravity will accelerate the movement of your body towards the center of the Earth, but once past the "middle earth", gravity would start to work against you.

That's how long would it take to get to the other side of the Earth. You must first create a vacuum by removing the air from the tunnel, otherwise friction, as an air mass that resists permanent would you slow down too much. In addition, the air pressure with how close the center would not crush the human body can resist.

Further, you need to wear an astronaut suit that would protect you from the intense heat of "core" and you would provide the necessary oxygen. After removing the air and putting on special equipment you could soar freefall through the tunnel. If gravity is constant, you would need about 19 minutes to reach the Earth's center. That means you plunge 25,000 kilometers per hour and you feel completely without weight, like an astronaut in space.

As you move the center of the Earth, the speed would slow down because gravity would push you against them, so that, once the other end of the world, catch normal rhythm again. In total, the trip takes about 38 minutes, which sure beats a flight of 40 hours from Santiago, Chile, to Xian, China.
